Sports Decisions to Command Attention of New U President

Posted on June 10, 2011November 27, 2011 by David Shama

Eric Kaler officially starts his job as University of Minnesota president on July 1.  Perhaps never in UM history has a new president’s arrival been so anticipated by those who passionately follow the school’s sports teams.

Kaler’s reputation for being supportive of athletics was documented at Stony Brook University in New York where he was provost.  And those who conducted the search for the Minnesota presidency to succeed Bob Bruininks put a priority on candidates willing and able to help the Gophers’ athletics department.

Jerry Kill talked to Kaler before he accepted the Gophers football job last fall.  Kill must have liked what he heard from Kaler or he could have remained at Northern Illinois, or perhaps accepted another major college job other than Minnesota.

The Gophers trail several other Big Ten Conference schools in football budgets and there is an arms race across the country to spend on facilities, recruiting and coaches’ salaries.  Kaler’s decisions about football and particularly other revenue producing sports at Minnesota will play an important role in the success of Gophers teams.

It’s not just about throwing more money at trying to be successful, but the dollars are important when combined with the right coaching leadership.  All signs so far are that Kill and his staff have the expertise, if they have the resources, to make Gophers’ football much better than it has been in decades.

Kaler probably has already received input on coaches at Minnesota.  He’s had meetings with athletics director Joel Maturi and it’s known that contracts remain to be finalized with Kill, basketball coach Tubby Smith, hockey coach Don Lucia and baseball coach John Anderson.

Kaler will also need to address Maturi’s future because his contract ends next year. Maturi told Sports Headliners he expects his future to be discussed with Kaler this fall.  “He has to get to know me.  I need to get to know him,” Maturi said.

Maturi has expressed interest in staying on as athletics director but it has to be a situation that is good for the school and him.  Among the factors on his side of the decision is the input of wife Lois who has been hurt by criticism of her husband.

Maturi has been a devout advocate of retaining all 25 men’s and women’s sports.  It’s a constant challenge maintaining a balanced budget and many athletic departments across the country, including ones that excel in football and men’s basketball, don’t have the large number of sports that Minnesota supports.

Kaler’s position on either maintaining or reducing the 25 teams will be interesting.  The educational mantra to provide participation opportunities is strong, but so too is the temptation to reduce some expenditures and direct those monies into football, men’s basketball and men’s hockey, the programs that captivate fans and really are the “window” to the University as viewed by the public.  The athletic department is almost entirely self-supporting, generating its revenues through gate receipts, broadcast rights, fundraising and other sources.

Worth Noting

The spring game begins at 1 p.m. and admission is free.  The players and coaches will be available on the field for autographs after the game.

Kill’s concern about roster depth and using each of his NCAA-allowed 15 practices to teach convinced him to have a practice situation and not a game tomorrow.  In the future the format will probably change and he might use celebrity coaches.

The scrimmage will be replayed on the Big Ten Network on Sunday starting at 6 p.m.

The Gophers will have a new radio home in the fall, KFAN.  Former WCCO Radio Gophers analyst Darrell Thompson will provide color commentary on Saturday and Mike Grimm will call the action on KFAN at the spring game.  Although WCCO used play-by-play man Dave Lee, and analysts Dave Mona and Thompson, a three-man booth is unusual in major college football.

The 76th annual NFL Draft starts at 7 p.m. Minneapolis time next Thursday and is expected to conclude about 11:30 p.m.  The second and third rounds will be on Friday with draft activity beginning at 5 p.m.  The draft continues at 11 a.m. on Saturday with rounds four-seven.  The Vikings have the 12th overall pick and nine total selections.

Larry Fitzgerald Sr. emailed that his son Larry Jr. and Arizona teammate Anquan Boldin, along with Green Bay’s Greg Jennings and American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, will attend tonight’s Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund event at the Metropolitan Club in Golden Valley.  The fund was established in honor of Larry Sr.’s wife who passed away in 2003 from breast cancer.

Colton Iverson, the former Gophers basketball player, returned home on Tuesday night after visits to the University of California and Santa Clara University, according to his father Chuck.  A visit to Texas A&M next week is possible, Chuck told Sports Headliners.  Colton has also visited Colorado State.  He will choose one of the above mentioned schools where he will redshirt next season and have one final season of eligibility.

Former Gophers basketball player Corky Taylor emailed about his sons including Kellen, the former basketball captain at Wayzata High School, who has been named Winona State’s male freshman of the year for all sports.  Kellen started 13 games last season while making 40 percent of his three point attempts.  He had the game winning shot against Wayne State.  Another son, Chris, just completed his basketball career at Brown, has a 3.7 GPA and graduates next month before beginning work at an investment banking firm. “They both make me look good as their dad,” Corky wrote.

Taylor Matson, who was announced this week as Gophers’ hockey captain for next season, is known for his work ethic. “There is a reason why his teammates voted him the Mike Crupi Most Determined Player each of the past two seasons and it is because nobody works or competes harder.  I look forward to him leading by example both on and off the ice next season,” coach Don Lucia said.

The tradition of Gophers hockey captains dates back to 1921-22.  Matson will be the program’s 149th player to be a captain or co-captain.

Wild prospect Mikael Granlund co-led SM-liiga scorers with 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) in 15 playoff games as HIFK Helsinki won the league title by sweeping Espoo Blues and fellow Wild prospect Jere Sallinen in the finals.

Remember ‘The Eye Opener’ and ‘Green Bushers’?

Posted on February 22, 2011November 27, 2011 by David Shama

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf might have made one heck of a smart move by offering Packers personnel guru Ted Thompson so much money he becomes the highest paid executive in professional sports.  Thompson recently signed a contract extension with Green Bay and received a raise.

With Thompson’s talent hunting savvy and young stars like quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker Clay Matthews III, NFC North teams including the Vikings look mismatched against the Green Gang in Green Bay.

Too bad Don Riley, the ex-sports columnist for the Pioneer Press, is long retired from writing his column, “The Eye Opener.”  He loved to needle “the Green Bushers,” but the “Eye” is closed.

Wonder if Adrian Peterson plans to be at mini-camp in June if the date coincides with another Adrian Peterson Day in Palestine, Texas?

Do you think Brett Favre still has a cell phone?

How about an exhibition basketball game with proceeds helping to reduce the federal budget?  Here’s the matchup:  Barack Obama & Pals versus the Tea Party All-Stars.  I can guarantee the outcome won’t be predetermined.

Don’t be surprised if the NBA contracts a couple of its teams.  Would you want to own clubs in towns like Memphis and New Orleans?  Those are cities with small economic engines and high crime rates.

Minneapolis won’t be contracted.  Too big of a market and it is the type of white collar town the NBA needs.  It doesn’t hurt that Wolves owner Glen Taylor is popular with the league power guys.

When will I stop missing former Wild star Marian Gaborik?  When he retires from hockey.  His medical file just gets thicker with reports this week of a concussion.

Gimmick lovers want to see hockey games decided by three-on-three matchups.  NHL purists are gagging.

What will Don Lucia be doing a year from now?

Glen Sonmor is the friendliest hockey guy I ever met.  Congratulations on his retirements from scouting and broadcasting.
