No Surprise if Ponder Starts Next Sunday

Posted on October 17, 2011November 27, 2011 by David Shama

Leslie Frazier was noncommittal last night about who he will start at quarterback next Sunday when the Vikings play the Green Bay Packers at Mall of America Field, but the guess here is rookie Christian Ponder will make his first NFL start.

Ponder played in his first regular season game last night when he took over for Donovan McNabb early in the fourth quarter with the Vikings trailing the Chicago Bears 39-10. Although he didn’t produce any points, Ponder passed for 99 yards and was often accurate throwing the ball despite an aggressive Bears pass rush. He completed 9 of 17 passes and showed exceptional awareness in the pocket and the speed to elude tacklers.

After the game Frazier was asked on KFAN Radio about the decision to bring Ponder into the game and the possibility of him starting against Green Bay. “The reason we put him in ─ whatever the score was at the time ─ I just felt like, you know what, let’s take a look at him,” Frazier said. “And as far as next week is concerned, we’ll sit down as a staff and we’ll talk about things on Monday.”

Ponder injected some life into an offense that has often been struggling through six games for the 1-5 Vikings. At 23, his arm and legs look lively compared with the 34-year-old McNabb who had an okay night completing 19 of 24 passes for 177 yards.

What’s the point in continuing with McNabb who is near the end of his career? The Vikings look like a lock to finish last in the NFC North where with less than half the season gone they are looking up at the 6-0 Packers, 5-1 Detroit and 3-3 Bears.

The time to prepare for 2012 can start next Sunday with Ponder. The Vikings have numerous issues that don’t even include the quarterback position but there are assets including Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, Jared Allen, Kevin Williams and Chad Greenway to build around. It looks like it’s time to find out if Ponder can be one of those assets this season or next.

The Vikings have lost 15 of their last 22 regular season games dating back to last season. The fan base is restless and the presence of Ponder on the field Sunday at home against the hated Packers will give Vikings fans something to cheer about.

At least for awhile.

Kill: U President Wants to Win

Posted on October 17, 2011November 27, 2011 by David Shama

First year Gophers football coach Jerry Kill is encouraged by his relationship with new University of Minnesota president Eric Kaler.  Kill told Sports Headliners Kaler wants a winning program and is willing to make football a priority at Minnesota.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that he wants to win, and he wants to have a good program,” Kill said.  “He wants it done the right way.  He doesn’t want shortcuts.  He wants to be proud of the football program.  He knows that we have some limitations right now.  He knows we have some issues.  It’s my job to work with him and Joel (Maturi) to get those issues solved.”

After decades of mismanagement by University administrators and coaches, the Gophers football program is perhaps the worst in the Big Ten.  Kill’s first team is 1-5 so far and 0-2 in the Big Ten where the Gophers have been outscored 103-17.

Kill inherited minimal talent and academic problems.  The coaching staff has questioned the toughness and commitment of players.  The program looks like it’s headed toward a second consecutive season of three wins or fewer.  “This ain’t gonna change over in two years,” Kill said.

Is Kaler embarrassed by the team?  “He didn’t come out and say that to me but I think we all are,” Kill said.  “I can’t speak for him.  We certainly are not performing or doing the things we need to do to represent our university.  But I think he also understands that there is an investment that has to take place.  It’s (the program) got to be important and it’s gotta be important to the president.  …You’re only as good as the top and he wants a successful football program.  There’s no bones about that.”

To improve results, Kill preaches that planning, work and performance start with himself and his assistants, but help is required also from the offices of the athletic director (Maturi) and president.  Assistance, too, is needed from supportive fans and special interest groups like the Minnesota high school football coaches and boosters willing to provide financial resources.

The Gophers program can’t realize its potential for the school without Kaler’s blessing.  “We need to be a better ‘front porch’ (for the University) and I think he understands that, and realizes that there needs to be a change,” Kill said.  “He wants to be a part of that. …”

Kill said he and Maturi need to outline for Kaler what the first set of priorities are, then the next priorities and so on.  Right now, for example, Kill speaks about improving the academics of his players and adding strength and weight coaches to the staff.

Years ago Kansas State football was the punch line of jokes about college football.  After coach Barry Alvarez took over the dismal program at Wisconsin in 1990 he talked about the streets leading to the stadium being so empty on game days a “cannon” could be fired without hitting anyone.  Those two schools were stuck deep in the muck of awful football but pulled themselves out not only with great coaches but supportive academic leaders.

Kill was asked if Kaler can do what president Jon Wefald did at Kansas State and chancellor Donna Shalala accomplished at Wisconsin?  “Absolutely,” he said.

Worth Noting

Posted on October 17, 2011November 27, 2011 by David Shama

Here are Sports Headliners’ weekly rankings of Big Ten Football teams: Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana and Minnesota.

Former Gophers football coach Lou Holtz wrote the introduction for Harvey Mackay’s new book, The Mackay MBA of Selling in the Real World.  Mackay, the well-known author, Minneapolis businessman and former Gophers golfer, is autographing copies of the book on Tuesday, November 1 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 801 Nicollet Mall.

Congratulations to football coach Carl Lemke of St. Croix Lutheran for earning his 250th win on Friday night.  Lemke has a career record of 250-121-0 in his 39th year as a head coach.

John Gagliardi, the legendary Saint John’s coach who has been in Collegeville since 1953, has seen his Johnnies lose three consecutive games for the first time since 1983.  Saint John’s, 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC, had a bye last Saturday but plays at Gustavus next Saturday.

Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith considers forwards Rodney Williams and Trevor Mbakwe, along with center Ralph Sampson III, to be starters but the two guard positions are undecided as his team begins fall practices.

Reserve forward Maurice Walker had surgery on his right knee in January and will not be allowed to have contact in practice for awhile.  The 6-10 Walker said his weight has dropped from about 320 pounds last season to under 300 by making better food choices and not eating late at night.

Both Walker and former Gophers guard Devoe Joseph grew up near each other in Ontario, Canada.  Walker said he and Joseph, now at Oregon, talk regularly.  “He’s pretty much like family,” Walker said.

Former Gophers center Spencer Tollackson manages Bill St. Mane Sporting Goods in south Minneapolis and does outside sales for the company.  Tollackson will again provide color commentary on Gophers radio broadcasts.

The Twins have sent catcher Rene Rivera, infielder Matt Tolbert and outfielder Jason Repko to their Triple A Rochester farm team, an indication management knows it must rebuild Minnesota’s bench.
