Sports Decisions to Command Attention of New U President

Posted on June 10, 2011November 27, 2011 by David Shama

Eric Kaler officially starts his job as University of Minnesota president on July 1.  Perhaps never in UM history has a new president’s arrival been so anticipated by those who passionately follow the school’s sports teams.

Kaler’s reputation for being supportive of athletics was documented at Stony Brook University in New York where he was provost.  And those who conducted the search for the Minnesota presidency to succeed Bob Bruininks put a priority on candidates willing and able to help the Gophers’ athletics department.

Jerry Kill talked to Kaler before he accepted the Gophers football job last fall.  Kill must have liked what he heard from Kaler or he could have remained at Northern Illinois, or perhaps accepted another major college job other than Minnesota.

The Gophers trail several other Big Ten Conference schools in football budgets and there is an arms race across the country to spend on facilities, recruiting and coaches’ salaries.  Kaler’s decisions about football and particularly other revenue producing sports at Minnesota will play an important role in the success of Gophers teams.

It’s not just about throwing more money at trying to be successful, but the dollars are important when combined with the right coaching leadership.  All signs so far are that Kill and his staff have the expertise, if they have the resources, to make Gophers’ football much better than it has been in decades.

Kaler probably has already received input on coaches at Minnesota.  He’s had meetings with athletics director Joel Maturi and it’s known that contracts remain to be finalized with Kill, basketball coach Tubby Smith, hockey coach Don Lucia and baseball coach John Anderson.

Kaler will also need to address Maturi’s future because his contract ends next year. Maturi told Sports Headliners he expects his future to be discussed with Kaler this fall.  “He has to get to know me.  I need to get to know him,” Maturi said.

Maturi has expressed interest in staying on as athletics director but it has to be a situation that is good for the school and him.  Among the factors on his side of the decision is the input of wife Lois who has been hurt by criticism of her husband.

Maturi has been a devout advocate of retaining all 25 men’s and women’s sports.  It’s a constant challenge maintaining a balanced budget and many athletic departments across the country, including ones that excel in football and men’s basketball, don’t have the large number of sports that Minnesota supports.

Kaler’s position on either maintaining or reducing the 25 teams will be interesting.  The educational mantra to provide participation opportunities is strong, but so too is the temptation to reduce some expenditures and direct those monies into football, men’s basketball and men’s hockey, the programs that captivate fans and really are the “window” to the University as viewed by the public.  The athletic department is almost entirely self-supporting, generating its revenues through gate receipts, broadcast rights, fundraising and other sources.

It appears the Big Ten Conference will move away from 11 a.m. football starts after making new arrangements with its TV partners.  Maturi said the change would provide a boost to the student ticket campaign starting later this summer.

Maturi also said the Gophers aren’t close yet on securing a lead donor for a new basketball practice facility.

Kill has been making promotional stops in outstate Minnesota in recent weeks.  The largest turnout so far was 270 at a Red Wing breakfast on Monday.

The Twins have played 22 home games, the fewest among major league teams.  But now the club has just 29 road dates until September 1.

The present home stand includes an interleague series against San Diego June 17-19 at Target Field.  The Twins lead the all-time series between the teams 6-3.  The Padres haven’t been in Minneapolis since 2005.

San Diego’s roster includes ex-Twins Orlando Hudson and Pat Neshek.  Hudson has been on the disabled list with a groin injury since late May.  He is hitting .217 with no home runs and seven RBI.  Neshek is 1-0 with a 2.30 ERA.  Neshek’s ERA in his last 10 games is 1.59.

Prep basketball authority Ken Lien reported via email that Williston State College has signed commitments for next season from Armstrong’s Marquel Curtis and St. Paul Johnson’s Jordan Jackson.  Simon Krych of St. Cloud Apollo has signed with Nebraska-Omaha.

Gophers’ senior forward Trevor Mbakwe is one of 22 players invited by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee to attend the USA Basketball Men’s World University Games Team training camp July 29 through August 7. Three other Big Ten players are on the invite list including Wisconsin senior guard Jordan Taylor from Bloomington.  The others are Northwestern senior forward John Shurna and Michigan State forward Draymond Green.

The training camp in Colorado Springs will select the 12-member team representing the USA at the World University Games August 13-23 in Shenzhen, China.  The last Gopher to play for Team USA at the World University Games was Vincent Grier following the 2004-05 season.

Tickets remain in all price categories for the September 30 LeeAnn Chin Challenge at Target Center.  Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Jim Courier and Michael Chang will compete in the event, part of the Champions Series circuit.  Courtside seats (first two rows) are $252 each with the lowest price ticket costing $37.  At the present time only lower level seating is available for purchase.

The Champions Series begins September 22 in Fort Lauderdale and is scheduled in 12 U.S. cities through October 22.  Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander will also participate.  A prize pool totaling $1 million will be shared by the top three finishers at season’s end.  Each of the 12 one-night tournaments will feature four champions paired off in one-set semi-finals competing for ranking points, culminating with winners contending for the title in an eight-game pro-set championship match.

The annual Hobey Baker banquet will be June 23 at the RiverCentre in St. Paul.  Andy Miele from Miami (Ohio) and winner of this years’ Hobey Baker Award as the best player in college hockey will be welcomed by about two-thirds of the former award winners including Minnesota-born recipients Marty Sertich (2005-Colorado College), Brian Bonin (1996-Minnesota), Robb Stauber (1988-Minnesota), Tom Kurvers (1984-Duluth) and Neal Broten (1981-Minnesota).  The guest speaker will be former Edina resident Brian Burke, now president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Banquet tickets are available via www.hobeybakeraward.com.

The Wild’s Mikko Koivu is serving in the Finnish military, a requirement by that country for Finnish men.  Wild prospect Mikael Granlund is also serving and a Finnish newspaper created a Granlund paper doll game where his likeness can be dressed in a hockey or military uniform.

The annual C.O.R.E.S-Minnesota Minutemen Golf Tournament will be July 13 at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.  Members of those organizations should contact Duane McEwen via email for more information, mcewendh@aol.com.  (C.O.R.E.S is an acronym for coaches, officials, educators, reporters and sports fans.)
