Jake Mauer told Sports Headliners his grandson Joe will be married to Maddie Bisanz on Saturday, December 1 at a church in St. Paul. “It will be a huge wedding,” Jake said.
The couple, who announced their engagement last December, has so many guests on the potential invitations list they have been searching for the best wedding and reception sites. The guest total could be 350, Jake said.
Mauer’s fiancée is a nurse in the Twin Cities. The two have known each other since high school at Cretin-Derham Hall.
Mauer played for the American League in last night’s All-Star game in Kansas City. He had a ninth inning single in the AL’s 8-0 loss to the National League.
Mauer is hitting .341 in his last 10 regular season games. His average is now .326 after batting .290 on June 1.
The Twins catcher is fourth in American League average, trailing the Angels Mike Trout by 15 points. At 29, Mauer could win his fourth American League batting championship. “Every time he goes up to the plate he thinks he is going to get a hit,” Jake said.
Mauer wasn’t healthy much of last season but 2012 is different. “I know he’s going to win (the batting title),” Jake said. “He’s feeling the best he’s ever felt, he says.”
The hometown hero has heard boos in the past. Jake said Joe wants to show fans he can play at a high level every day and he acknowledged to his grandfather the criticism has hurt.
“It bothered him. It really did,” Jake said.
